Music and Drama Education Awards - The Inclusive Music Consortium

It is fantastic to be a part of this partnership of music organisations who are working together to ensure equitable access to music making. The Inclusive Music Consortium is led by Creative United and includes representatives from Open Up Music, The OHMI Trust, Youth Music, Technology in Music Education UK (TiME) and Music for Youth.

On Wednesday 23rd March we were delighted that the Consortium was presented with the Music Teacher Magazine Editor’s Award at the Music and Drama Education Awards ceremony in London. The Consortium was selected by Harriet Clifford, Editor of the Music Teacher Magazine, in recognition of the important work the partnership is doing to break down barriers to music education.

The group focusses it’s work around six main objectives which include: ‘Improve our collective understanding of the potential demand for adapted and specialist musical instruments’ and to ‘Raise the profile of music making by disabled children and adults’. In 2021 the Consortium produced the Guide to Buying Adaptive Musical Instruments, providing information on the different options available in conducting batons, brass, music technology, percussion, strings, and wind. These options include lightweight instruments, one-handed instruments, apps, as well as supports and accessories for standard instruments, electronic instruments and software.

In 2022 the Consortium are working together to update and extend the Guide to Buying Adaptive Instruments, develop and curate resources and information and will be taking part in our Connectivity events programme in Sept 2022.
