Intasound Music - Instrument and Equipment repair service for education
Intasound Music is based in Leicester and has provided musical products, expert advice and services for over 40 years and the team has developed deep-rooted relationships within the local community of artists, venues and beyond.
When we heard about the work they are doing to support school music departments with an equipment repair service, we were keen to hear more. We met up with Lloyd Wright, who has been working at Intasound throughout its long history.
Lloyd’s father established Intasound in 1976, and they specialise in PA Systems, Home Recording, Digital Pianos & Keyboards, Drums, Guitars & more! Lloyd is conscious of the challenges schools face with limited budgets and the daily demands that working with young musicians can bring. Lloyd said, “we have all seen that dusty cupboard at the back of the classroom, or equipment hidden away in the vaults of a community organisation. That’s where the old, unused or broken instruments, keyboards, amps or mixing desks lurk! We have even seen that some equipment remains unused because there is a lack of knowledge or understanding and we wanted to do something to help.”
Lloyd and the team have estimated that 15% to 30% of a school’s musical inventory is out of use at any one time - when it could be working. To support schools and other education providers, Intasound developed a Maintenance Service to help save time and money by servicing and repairing musical instruments and the sound and lighting equipment.
There are three packages available. Plan 1 is ideal for primary schools and smaller education providers and costs £499 per year. This includes a full-day site visit with two repair technicians, it also covers some replacement parts. Plan 2 - aimed at medium to large secondary schools and colleges costs £999 per year and includes two full-day visits with two technicians and a PA system health check/setup, along with access to emergency loan stock. Plan 3 is for academies and group education providers, the cost is £2499 per year and comes with a substantial six full-day visits per year and staff training to support ongoing CPD.
The team recently visited a college where it repaired 16 midi keyboards, six amps and three mixing desks, along with twenty stringed instruments - all in one day! This amounts to a substantial saving compared to replacing, and with an urgent need to reduce our impact on the environment, being able to repair and re-use makes a lot of sense!
